The other night when we came home from Wellington there was this rainbow over Nelson. On the way home in the car there was a break in the clouds and the full moon light up the rain in the darkness, making a night rainbow. It was an amazing site, more subtle than a normal rainbow and harder to see. I had never seen one before. It reminded me of this poem by a talented Laura Ranger, a New Zealander, who wrote this poem when she was about 7. I think it is my favourite piece of poetry.
“Two Word Poem.”
The toad sat on a red stool
it was a toadstool.
The rain tied a bow
in the cloud’s hair
it was a rainbow.
Which witch put sand
in my sandwich?
I stood upon the bridge
then I understood.
I sat on the ledge and
thought about what I know.
It was knowledge.
