Husqvarna Automatic / Viking 21A Manual

I get alot of search hits for the above keywords, and after my review here I scanned and sent my manual to a couple of people, as it’s non existent on the interwebs. I’m a bit reluctant to post it on the sidebar- not sure about copyright issues, but if you’re after a copy leave me a comment and I’ll email it to you download it directly using the link below.

Happy stitching!!

ETA I have set up a page for you to download this directly. Please see my new blog for details.

Hi! I love your blog too. It was really fun looking back through it. When I got to the photo of your gorgeous dog about to eat the dandelion I just couldn’t stop laughing. Those baby blankets are beautiful.
I used to live in NZ, in Wellington. My husband is from Hamilton. It is amazing looking at your photos from around the country, makes me miss it.
I would love a copy of your husqy manual, thanks so much for the offer. I have since bought a repro but was disappointed to find it had the logo of the company who printed it across every page, to the point that it isn’t that easy to read. I know someone else that would love a copy too, http://thisisemilykate.blogspot.com/, and who I’m sure would love your blog. I will pass on the link, if that’s ok
    Great to meet you.

I ran across your site via Tiny Happy. I came across my dear old lady several months ago in a yard sale. I didn’t buy her immediately, wondering what hubby would say, but I coudn’t resist, so went back and bought her. You do not come across old Husqvarna’s that much in the States.

If you could please e-mail the manual to me that would be great, as I have looked and cannot find one.

Thank you for your blog – not an easy thing to keep updated!
I am watching Viking type 21 on ebay right now, considering to buy it, can you be so kind and tell me if it’s quiet or loud machine when it operates? And if you know what is the fair price for it. Thank you so very much, happy new year!! Liza

I’d love a copy of the manual, as I’m trying to figure it out well before her birthday next week. Thanks for making it available!

    Hi!

I actually read your review before I purchased the machine on craigslist. May I please have a copy of the manual? Also, I’m not sure which model it is exactly (19,19e,21,21a,etc.etc.), so I was also wondering if you knew the difference between the two.

    Thank you so much,
    Catherine

Hi. We have Husqvarna Automatic we got a while a ago. Amazing machine, works nicely and sews both lightweight and heavyweight fabrics much better than newer machines. It would be really nice to have a manual for it.

Thank you for your effort on supporting old sewing machines – way too often people throw these away, when they could take them for repair, and have nice machine for few more decades.

  31. 31 Riikka April 4, 2009 at 2:57 am

Hello! I just got my Husqvarna Automatic, but I don have a manual for that. So I would be very pleased, if you could send me a copy of yours. Thanks!

  32. 32 mike zapponi April 8, 2009 at 5:00 pm

I just found a model-21 in a thrift store. Obviously very underused but well cared for. Still in the original suitcase. Seems to run well and smoothe. I’d be delighted if you would kindly send a manual my way. Obviously this machine has a big following. I didn’t know that at first but when I saw it I just knew it was a really well built and functional machine. I have a very old White Rotary that is like wise a real super fine machine. Your generous offer is apprecited.
    thank you, Mike, Southern Oregon

  36. 36 Roberto May 4, 2009 at 9:27 am

    Hi!

My name is Roberto and I’m from Sweden.

I just found an old Husqvarna CI 21 but in the case there was only the manual for the Husqvarna 20. Mosst of it is the same as for the 21 but some things arn’t. I would love to have a copy!

    Thanks so much!

    Best regards,
    Roberto

  37. 37 Roberto May 4, 2009 at 9:30 am

    Roberto here again.

Just out of curiosity, is this a good sewing machine? How does it stand against modern machines?

    Thank you!
I don’t know much about sewing, but I want to learn.

    /Roberto

    • 38 Jones October 9, 2014 at 5:46 pm

Probably the best sewing machine ever. Better than the Pfaff 260 and a more precise sewing experience than most of the modern machines, leather is no problem, too.

  38. 39 Tammy Hodgkins May 17, 2009 at 11:08 am

I was given this sewing machine and it has been packed away for years. I would love a copy of the manual as I am not sure of all the capabilities. I am having trouble getting the bobbin to stay in and I know there is something that I am doing wrong. Please help

    Tammy

    • 40 Coleen Astrella September 30, 2015 at 11:43 am

Pinch the bobbin holder (this holds the bobbin in place) inward as you insert the holder into the machine. It should just click in if you have the
armature straight up as you insert it. Coleen in Maryville, Tn.

  49. 51 Karyn Stegenius June 14, 2009 at 12:02 am

    Hej from Sweden,

I have sort of inherited this machine from my husband’s side of the family. After having to leave behind my Sears Kenmore Zig Zag that I had since I was 14, I am at a loss with this beautiful machine. There is of course, NO manual. Can you help. I really need to know how this machine operates and as you have said, it can not be found on line.
Thanks if you can send it to me. PS. Is it in english???
    Karyn

  50. 52 louise June 14, 2009 at 1:14 am

I have the machine you have a picture of. I cannot get the thread to stay in or how to get it to function without making knots. I have noooo idea how to do this!

You mentioned you have a manual, can you mail it to me? I’ll be forever grateful!

    • 53 Carol September 30, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Hello from Oregon….have you gotten a answer to your knotting question?? if not, try a good brand of thread..Mettler and good needles…Schmedtz 80/12 sharp for general sewing. Many times that is the problem.
I found for $10 a essentially new 21E at the thrift shop. It has about 12 feet, 7 bobbins, 3 cams, the manual and this gizmo that you pick the stitch you want, dial the window to that selected stitch and in the window it shows which cam to put in and how to set the stitch length and width….LOVE IT. I was soooo thrilled!!! very quiet and heavy as a boat anchor.
It appears to have never been used….not pin scratches or scissors nicks. LUCKY ME!!!!

This is the same manual that I have for my 21E, so will probably work for your 19E or close enough.

    Hi there,

Just downloaded the manual, so many thanks for putting that up for everyone!

I am trying to get a friends Viking 21 in order, but it is missing a few things… Bobbin case, bobbins, and also has no feet. Does anyone here know of somewhere online or in Australia to find any of these??

I have had a look around, but no luck so far…

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thank you,

    V

    • 77 Jessicah December 10, 2009 at 9:51 am

      Hi Violet,

I had good sucess contacting a local sewing machine shop which stocks the newer range of Husqvarna machines. Let me know if you don’t have any luck in Australia and I will send the contact details of the shop I contacted- he was very helpful and happy to send out parts.

      Good Luck! Jessicah

  70. 78 silverarrow January 5, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Try ebay, bobbins, case and all pressure feet are available at low prices. The green 50’s-60’s machines are better than the low priced modern ones.

  71. 79 Brie January 6, 2010 at 8:31 am

yay! This is the closest thing I could find to my 21E. Thanks so much.

  72. 80 Bill B January 6, 2010 at 3:33 pm

Amazing! I expected nobody would have info on this machine–I inherited it from my mother, who got it when I was in high school in 1953. But I Googled “Viking 21” and Bingo! Like many others, I need a manual. There are some things my mother didn’t tell me…

  73. 81 Stewart January 16, 2010 at 7:15 pm

    Hi,
I found one of these machines sitting in its case by the side of the road on garbage day. Arghhh. Immediately snapped it up. I need to spend more quality time with it. I have 15 machines and am totally smitten with all of them (its surely not healthy 🙂 ).

It came with the foot control but no manual so I’ve just downloaded it. Now this machine and I can get better acquainted.

    Thanks and love the blog.

    • 82 simone September 2, 2010 at 5:12 am

lol . I have a collection of nine machines myself !!!
I just bought the 19e for 50 on ebay ..I wonder myself if my fascination is unhealthy ! 🙂

Thank you so much for making the manual available. I collect sewing machines for charities and I really like to find these older all-metal models for sending to other countries. I am sending one to Juarez, Mexico this weekend and I was so glad to have the manual to send along.

    hello all,
my mother gave me a husqvarna 21E few months ago and is passionate about the things I could do with it, I have no accessories, but still keep the bag and I love that I can carry it everywhere.
I wonder where I can find a manual or feet to make other points.

a hug for everyone from Asuncion, Paraguay.

I purchased a 19E from an estate sale because it was a pretty color! (I know, the wrong reason to buy a sewing machine!!) I can really use a copy of your manual. Are you still able to send one? I love your pics, too! Thanks, Mo’s mom.

  87. 96 annaochomar July 14, 2010 at 5:32 am

    Thx a lot!

Could have guessed someone posted a manual. Husqvarna being Swedish I didn’t expect to find it in English. Kudos to you for saving the day.

I’ve just bought the 21A and the case included a copy of the manual with the foldout covers plus an additional book for the Husqvana Automatics “50 Nice Gifts”.

  90. 99 Suzie August 9, 2010 at 4:25 am

I, too, have recently acquired a 19E and would be grateful for a copy of the manual, as I’m having all sorts of problems with the upper thread tension – no matter what I try it always too tight (I’m wondering if there’s a sticking issue?)
Anyhoo – hopefully you’ll get this as your original post was ages ago!
    Hope you can help!

I just bought a lovely old Husqvarna Zigzag 19E at an auction for $50 and am so excited to begin using it. It looks identical to yours, but no manual came with it and I am unsure about how to adjust the zigzag and stitch lengths. I don’t want to mess it up. If you could email me a copy of the manual I would be so grateful. Thank you for sharing it with all of the devotees of this fine machine!

  93. 102 sewsister August 26, 2010 at 6:32 am

Thank you so much for posting your Husqvarna manual, I just picked up a 19E with German manual and needed an English version, this will do just fine!

Just found your blog, it’s fun to see and read what others say about the machine. I have my mother’s 21 on which she made all my clothes, hers and my dad’s and after a tuneup, today it is sewing just as great as when it was new. I learned to sew on it by sewing quilt blocks together.

  97. 106 Gaila B October 10, 2010 at 5:17 am

Oops!! Forgot to request a copy of the manual, would be greatly appreciated since the original was water damaged some time ago.

Howdy, just found your post and would appreciate a copy of the manual you have graciously offered. I am unemployed and in the throw$ of creating Christma$ present$, so finding a *free* manual to troubleshoot my apparently “not used often enough” viking 21 is key to getting it to work as it should.

Hi. I have just been given my father’s Husqvarna 21 sewing machine he bought in the late 1950s in Sweden. He sadly passed away 10 years ago and although I understand a little Danish (he was from Denmark), the Swedish instruction manual is of no sense to me. Please could I trouble you to email me a copy in English? Many thanks in advance, Jan Simonsen (Mr)

    Hi Jessicah,
Thanks for making the manual available. Last week I was given a Viking 21a from a friend who knew I have been looking for one for a long time. Except for the extension table (it came in a cabinet) your manual has made it complete.
I know I will enjoy using this machine.
    Thanks!

    Hi there,

If you are up to it I could also use a copy of the 21A manual. I have a bit more to learn about the machine and with a little TLC it should last another 50 years. Do you know where I could find the schematics to the machine to ID spare parts if needed?

    Thanks and best regards,

    Nels

  138. 150 Marna November 9, 2011 at 7:31 am

    Click to access Vikingservicemanuals.pdf

You can find a lot of sites wanting to charge for the “Technical Briefing” or you can download for free from this guy’s blog. My mom has the 21 and I have the 21e and this covers both machines and more. I printed it out on a laser printer and put it in a binder. Very easy to read and has schematics too.

    • 151 Marna November 15, 2011 at 8:13 am

I don’t think I explained my first post very well. This is a link to a blog with a pdf download for the technical service manual covering several Viking sewing machines including the class 21 (called “20” in the Technical Briefing). It is 181 pages and has everything you need to know to recalibrate, refurbish or rebuild your machine. I got a used Viking Husqvarna 21e with many problems and now it sews perfectly!

Thank you a million times over for making this manual available. My machine is a CI 21A so it is slightly different but close enough to use this manual. I found this at a garage sale for $20 and it runs like a dream after cleaning and oiling it. I absolutely love it. I only have the A cam so if anyone has access to the B & C cams – I know they are scarce – I would love to buy them. Any other feet would be good too. Thanks so much. You can email me @ samweb50@gmail.com with any info.

Wonderful blog! I found it while surfing around on
Yahoo News. Do you have any tips on how to get
listed in Yahoo News? I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Appreciate it

Heya! I understand this is kind of off-topic however
I had to ask. Does running a well-established blog such
as yours require a massive amount work? I’m completely new to writing a blog however I do write in my journal on a daily basis. I’d like
to start a blog so I can easily share my own experience and feelings online.
Please let me know if you have any recommendations or tips for brand new aspiring bloggers.
    Thankyou!

    appreciated. Kudos

I have an original manual for a 15E in, I think, either Swedish or German that came with a machine I bought recently in Palm Springs, CA. It was mostly frozen. Had to soak the insides with Liquid Wrench for several days to get it working. Sews beautifully. Very quiet. Came in a suitcase with all the accessories. This makes five vikings for me. I’ll put this one on eBay soon.

We bought an early CI 21 in the box with everything original. It has the owners manual, the wheel chart for the different stitches etc… What a find, we bought it because it looked retro and cool… I was really surprised to find everything in there! Even old fabric that had been stitched on with all
The different styles, and a button… my wife will hopefully learn now as A friend is a confident sewer & is going to help…
Out of curiosity, are they worth anything?

  203. 227 Victoria Perrior August 18, 2015 at 5:25 pm

Hi, my partner has just bought me a mint condition CI21 Husquvarna Automatic. Could you please email me a copy of the manual? I see from the comments above that you are the ‘go-to’ person for them! Does it only do zig-zag, or am I being daft? It only has zig-zag stitches on the wheel. All information gratefully received!

rework old content but add very littl of value. It’s terrific to
read an enlightening post of some true value to me, as a reader.

It is going down on the list of factors I need to emulate aas a new blogger.

    Keep up the terrific work!

    Hi Jess
Many thanks for posting the Husqvarna 21 Manual for all of us to use ! The old metal machines are the best. I’ll bet a new electronic one would be of no use if thrown in a dumpster for a couple of months !!!
I was surprised that Husqvarna Sweden don’t still make copies available, especially when I see how many people are still wanting one.
Regards from Inger in South Africa.
